Description

For sale: a rare and early Book Club edition, second printing hardcover copy of Watership Down by Richard Adams. First Edition unstated, 1972 Macmillan. Second Printing with number line reversed, 10 through 2.

The book is in Very Good condition with lightly soiled and rubbed boards with clean cloth quarter-wrap and a light 1″ damp stain on the front. There is very strong title gilt on a slightly wrinkled spine and the facsimile signature on front. Also with some smudges on page blocks, loose binding, mild spine tilt, rolled spine ends, moderate edge wear, and strong corners. The interior of the book is also in Very Good condition with the previous owner’s bookplate removed from the front paste-down, with a few small paper remnants still present, but hidden under the front flap. The entire length of the last free paper was repaired with cellophane tape, which is just starting to yellow. No other marks, inscriptions, or other signs of ownership. The interior pages are clean and lightly toned. The only sign of being a book club edition is the small Maple Leaf deboss on the rear board. Same size, layout, page numbers and jacket design as the True First Edition.

The dust jacket is in Very Good condition with moderate surface wear, a sunned spine, heavy edge wear, chips and gaps. The dust jacket is an unstated Book Club Edition with no price on the front flap. Looks good in a Brodart archival wrap.

A phenomenal worldwide bestseller for more than forty years, Richard Adams’s Watership Down is a timeless classic and one of the most beloved novels of all time. Set in England’s Downs, a once idyllic rural landscape, this stirring tale of adventure, courage and survival follows a band of very special creatures on their flight from the intrusion of man and the certain destruction of their home. Led by a stouthearted pair of brothers, they journey forth from their native Sandleford Warren through the harrowing trials posed by predators and adversaries, to a mysterious promised land and a more perfect society.

Large volume ships promptly in a corrugated mailer with the book wrapped in both craft paper and multiple layers of bubble wrap.
