For sale is a rare and exceptional Early Reprint of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Complete Authorized Edition stated with Black and white illustrations by Jessie Willcox Smith whose color illustrations were in the first edition. No Edition stated, but undated A. L. Burt with 1911 copyright on the copyright page and “Published with arrangement of Little Brown and Company” stated on the undated title page. A. L. Burt was a discount publisher who published popular novels at a reduced price. This same Authorized Edition was later revised with the release of the 1933 movie with Katherine Hepburn when they replaced the black and white illustrations with photos of the actors in the movie. This early reprint probably dates from 1915 – 1925.
Very Good hardcover with clean, bright blue boards with a few scuffs and scratches and a strong sheen on the textured cloth. The ink is very strong on the title and author’s name on the front board, and the lightly sunned spine. Also with clean, lightly toned page blocks, tight binding, mild spine tilt, rolled spine ends, moderate to heavy edge wear and rounded and rubbed corners with no bare spots. Previous owner’s name, city and 1941 written in ink on the top of the title page. There is also a very light ink stamp on the reverse of the rear free endpaper. No other marks or inscriptions inside. Pages clean and lightly toned.
