For sale: a Rare and Exceptional first edition, first printing hardcover copy of The Hunting of the Snark an Agony in Eight Fits by Lewis Carroll with no dust jacket. Edition unstated, 1980 Mayflower Books. First Printing with no subsequent printing. Nine illustrations by Henry Holiday. Single volume issue 83 pp.
The book is in Very Good condition with bright illustrated boards with strong title ink on lightly sunned spine and stronger on the front and rear cover designs by Holiday. The volume has tape stains on all four edges, clean page blocks, tight binding, mild spine tilt, lightly rolled spine ends, mild edge wear, and rubbed corners. The interior of the book is in Very Good condition with the Library bookplate on the first free end paper and abrasions from the card removal on the rear end paper. The library’s 3-line ink stamp appears on the title page and double-stamped Withdrawn on the half title page. No other marks, inscriptions, or other signs of the Library inside. The text pages are clean and lightly toned, making it an excellent addition to any collection.
The dust jacket is also in Near Fine condition, with mild edge wear, and looks great in a new non-Library archival wrap
The Hunting of the Snark is the poem by the famous English writer Lewis Carroll. It is what is known as a nonsense poem, as opposed to Lewis’ other works.
