Description

For sale is a  Near Fine hardcover first edition, second printing of Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind by Shunryu Suzuki. Edited by Trudy Dixon; with  an introduction by Richard Baker. First Edition stated, 1970 Weatherhill. Second printing 1971 is also stated.

The exterior of the book is in Near Fine  condition with bright boards with light smudges, featuring the calligraphy by Suzuki Roshi on the front, strong title ink on a straight spine and a plain rear board. Also, light foxing on top and some darker spots on the side and bottom page blocks, tight binding, moderate spine tilt, lightly rubbed spine ends, moderate to heavy edge wear, and strong corners. The interior of the book is also in Near Fine condition with no marks, inscriptions or other signs of ownership inside. A frayed ribbon is bound to the spine top. The end papers and the interior pages are clean and lightly toned, making it an excellent addition to any collection.

The dust jacket is in Very Good condition with $4.50 price intact on the top  of the front flap but a harmless cut to the bottom corner. Also with, heavy soiling, a sunned spine and heavy edge wear, chips and small gaps. This is the first issue dust jacket in heavy wear. Looks good in new Brodart archival wrap.

In the thirty years since its original publication, Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind has become one of the great modern Zen classics, much beloved, much re-read, and much recommended as the best first book to read on Zen. Suzuki Roshi presents the basics – from the details of posture and breathing in zazen to the perception of nonduality—in a way that is not only remarkably clear, but that also resonates with the joy of insight from the first to the last page. It’s a book to come back to time and time again as an inspiration to practice.
