For sale: a Rare and Exceptional first US edition, presumed first printing hardcover copy of Youth and Two Other Stories: Heart of Darkness and The End of the Tether by Joseph Conrad in a new archival wrap. First US Edition unstated, 1903 Doubleday, Page and Co. presumed First Printing with 1916 on the title page and a two-line copyright on the copyright page. Not part of a Collected Works or Authorized Edition. The first hardcover appearance of Heart of Darkness.

The book is in Near Fine condition with clean, bright boards with a strong sheen, strong title gilt on a straight spine and the front cover, clean page blocks, tight binding, no spine tilt, rolled and lightly rubbed spine ends, mild edge wear, and rubbed corners. The interior of the book is in Very Good condition with the first free end paper removed by the previous owner. No other marks, inscriptions, or other signs of ownership inside. The end papers and the interior pages are clean and lightly toned, making it an excellent addition to any collection.

The dust jacket is in Poor condition with heavy toning, heavy edge wear, and a 2″ section missing from the top spine end. All four flap corners have been cut, but the $1.50 price is on the sunned spine is intact. Looks good in a Brodart archival wrap.

Youth, a Narrative; and Two Other Stories is a collection of three works of short fiction by Joseph Conrad, originally serialized in Blackwood’s Magazine. The volume was published in 1902 by William Blackwood and Sons. The collection includes “Heart of Darkness”, considered one of the finest examples of modern fiction.
