For sale is a  Near Fine first paperback edition, first printing of The Voices: Nine Poems with a Title Poem by Rainer Maria Rilke. First Edition described, July 1977 New Directions. Fifth Printing June 1981  stated. 16 page stapled binding with card stock covers. Uncredited biographical sketches at the rear (with facsimile of Rilke’s signature.

The exterior of this thin paperback edition is in Very Good condition, with clean, bright covers with no creases, mild surface wear, no title on a stapled spine, clean page blocks, rubbed spine ends, mild edge wear and lightly rounded corners. The interior of the book is also in Very Good condition with an erased price on the first free end paper. No other marks, inscriptions, or other signs of ownership inside. The end papers and the interior pages are clean and bright, making it an excellent addition to any collection.

The title poem explores the contrasting experiences of the wealthy and the impoverished. It argues that while the rich have the privilege of silence, the poor must openly express their suffering to be noticed. The poem critiques society’s tendency to ignore the plights of the less fortunate, suggesting that this forces them to resort to extreme measures, such as singing, to be heard.
