For sale: a rare and exceptional first edition, first printing hardcover copy of  Three Plays: Six Characters in Search of an Author, Henry IV, Right You Are! (If You Think So) by Luigi Pirandello with no dust jacket.   First US Edition unstated, 1922 Dutton. First Printing with no subsequent printing. Only 1500 copies in first print run.

The book is in Very Good condition with bright boards with light spots, a few scuff marks and a 2″ partial crease on the front Cloth on boards still has a pattern present and a bit of sheen.  The binding is starting to loosen, but is still free of of any seam cracks. Also with a straight spine, lightly foxed page blocks, mild spine tilt, lightly rubbed spine ends, moderate edge wear and rounded corners. Paper title on spine has a few chips missing, but ink is strong and label is more than 95% complete.

The interior of the book is also in Very Good condition with the names of two names and one date on the front paste down. No other marks, inscriptions or signs of ownership inside. The end papers and title pages are heavily foxed and the interior pages are clean, strong, supple and lightly toned.

Pirandello ranks with Strindberg, Brecht, and Beckett as a seminal figure in modern drama. Innovative and influential, he broke decisively with the conventions of realist theatre to foreground the tensions between art and reality. In his best known play, Six Characters in Search of an Author, six characters, imagined but then abandoned by their author, intrude on the rehearsals of a provincial theatre company in an attempt to play out their family drama.

In  Henry IV, a young man believes himself to be the Holy Roman Emperor; attempts to cure him of his delusion have disastrous consequences. Also includes Right You Are! (If You Think So).
