For sale: a Rare and Exceptional first hardcover edition, first printing of The Living Corpse: A Drama in Six Acts and Twelve Tableaux by Leo N. Tolstoi with no dust jacket. First US Edition unstated, 1919 Nicholas L. Brown. First printing, with 1919 on the title and copyright pages and no subsequent printing.

The book is in Good condition with clean, lightly faded boards with some sheen on both and uneven fading on the rear. Also with a faded title on a sunned spine, clean, toned page blocks, tight binding, mild spine tilt, frayed spine ends, and lightly rubbed and rounded corners. The interior of the book is in Very Good condition with the previous owner’s book plate on the front paste down and a newspaper review of the New York premiere of the play with John Barry in the lead role. No other marks, inscriptions, or other signs of ownership inside. The interior pages are clean and evenly toned, making it an excellent addition to any collection.

The drama The Living Corpse (Zhivoi Trup), was written in the year 1900, at Moscow, at Pirogov. (the estate of Sergey Nikolaevich, Tolstoi’s brother) and at Yashaya Polyana (Tolstoi’s own estate.) The following translation is made from the only authorized Russian edition based on the manuscripts in the possession of the late Count Tolstoi’s.
