For sale: a Rare and Exceptional first US edition first printing hardcover copy of Strait is the Gate by André Gide. First
The exterior of the book is in Very Good condition with clean, bright boards with a bit of sheen, and strong title gilt on the front board, but missing from the heavily sunned spine and only visible up close as a deboss. There are two tears and a missing piece of cloth on the top spine end. There is also a clean top page block, the side deckle edges are unmarked and the bottom block shows mild compression. Also featured is a strong binding, no spine tilt, moderate to heavy edge wear, and rubbed and rounded corners with no bare spots.
The interior of the book is also in Very Good condition with the ghost of an erased price on the first free end paper and the previous owner’s three line inscription on the half title page dated 1925. No other marks, inscriptions or other signs of ownership inside. The end papers and paste downs are clean with strong gutters. The interior pages are moderately toned and a little stiff, making it an excellent addition to any collection.
