Description

For sale: a Rare and Exceptional first edition, first printing hardcover copy of The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro, complete with a Near Fine dust jacket protected in a new archival wrap. First American Edition stated, 1989 Knopf. First printing with no subsequent printing.

The exterior of the book is in Near Fine condition, with clean boards with mild fading at the edges, strong title gilt on a straight spine, a 1″ square of dots on the bottom of otherwise clean page blocks, a tight binding, mild spine tilt, lightly rolled spine ends, mild edge wear and one bumped corner. The interior of the book is also in Near Fine condition, with the ghost of an erased price on the first free end paper. No other marks, inscriptions, or any other signs of ownership. The rear end paper and the interior pages are clean and bright.

The dust jacket is also in Near Fine condition with mild surface and edge wear. First state jacket with the $18.95 price on the front flap, 10/89 date code on the rear flap and the striking design by Chip Kidd. Looks great in a new Brodart archival wrap.

Winner of the Booker Prize. This is Kazuo Ishiguro’s profoundly compelling portrait of a butler named Stevens. Stevens, at the end of three decades of service at Darlington Hall, spending a day on a country drive, embarks as well on a journey through the past in an effort to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving the “great gentleman,” Lord Darlington. But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington’s “greatness,” and much graver doubts about the nature of his own life.

Ships promptly in corrugated mailer with book wrapped in both craft paper and multiple layers of bubble wrap.
