For sale: a Rare and Exceptional first hardcover University Classics edition, early printing of The Prince and Other Works by Nicolo Macchiavelli with the rare dust jacket protected in a new archival wrap. University Classics Edition stated, 1946 Hendricks House, a new division of Farrar, Straus. First Printing with no subsequent printing.  This volume is part of the University Classics, edited by Walter Hendricks.

The exterior of the book is in Very Good condition with clean, bright boards, strong title and author gilt, clean page blocks and a tight binding. Also with no spine tilt, rolled spine ends, mild edge wear, and rounded and rubbed  corners.  The interior of the book is in Very Good condition with the first free end paper removed so the volume opens to the half title page. The rear end papers and interior pages are clean and lightly toned.

The dust jacket is in Poor condition with the top half missing of the spine and the rest protected in a new archival wrap. First state dust jacket with the $1.25 price on the front flap.

Niccolo Machiavelli was one of the principal secretaries to the Signoria at Florence and undertook diplomatic missions to various courts, before his imprisonment and exile. To quote his own words, this book discusses “what a principality is, what kinds there are, how they can be acquired, how they can be kept and why they are lost”.
