Description

For sale: a Rare and Exceptional early collected works edition hardcover copy of Poems: New and Revised by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Collected Works Edition unstated, 1888 Houghton Mifflin; Riveride edition.  No Printing information on copyright page with 1883 as the latest date.

The exterior of the book is in Very Good condition with clean, bright boards with a bit of sheen, and strong title gilt on the lightly sunned spine. Clearly visible from a distance are “POEMS” on the top, “EMERSON” in the middle and the Houghton Mifflin logo on the bottom of the spine. There is surprisingly strong gilt on the top page block and the bottom block shows moderate compression. Also featured is a strong binding, mild spine tilt, heavily rubbed spine ends, moderate to heavy edge wear, and rubbed corners with bare spots.

The interior of the book is also in Very Good condition with no bookplates, inscriptions or other signs of ownership inside. The end papers and paste downs are clean with cracked gutters. The interior pages are clean and moderately toned, making it an excellent addition to any collection.

Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American essayist, lecturer, poet, and leader of the Transcendentalist movement in the middle of the nineteenth century. He is most known for his essays on Nature and Self-Reliance. Emerson was also a mentor and friend of fellow Transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau.

 Emerson’s Poems (1888), is part of the multi-volume Collected Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson edition published by Houghton Mifflin. Poems was Volume IX.
