For sale: a Rare and Exceptional early collected works edition hardcover copy of The Conduct of Life by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Complete Works
The exterior of the book is in Very Good condition with clean, bright boards with a bit of sheen, and strong title gilt on a lightly sunned spine. Clearly visible from a distance are “CONDUCT OF LIFE” on the top, “EMERSON” in the middle and the Houghton Mifflin logo is lightly faded on the bottom of the spine. There is some gilt on the top page block and the bottom block shows moderate compression. Also featured is a mild spine tilt, heavily rubbed spine ends, moderate to heavy edge wear, and rubbed corners with bare spots.
The interior of the book is also in Good condition with no bookplates, inscriptions or other signs of ownership inside. The end papers and paste downs are clean with cracked gutters. The interior pages are clean and moderately toned, with pages 229-265 missing from a recently glued binding.

The Conduct of Life was first published in 1860 at the height of Emerson’s fame. The book was well received and sold very well.
