For sale: a Rare and Exceptional hardcover copy of The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare in a Near Fine dust jacket, protected in a new archival wrap. First Arden Shakespeare Edition 1905.  Seventh edition, revised and reset, 1955. Reprinted with minor corrections 1959. Edited by John Russell Brown.

Near Fine hardcover with clean, bright, cloth-covered boards, strong gilt title on a straight spine, lightly foxed page blocks, no spine tilt, lightly rolled spine ends, mild edge wear, and one rounded corner. The interior of the book is  in Near Fine condition with an ink stamp price on the first free end paper and no other marks, inscriptions or signs of ownership. The end papers and the interior pages are clean and lightly toned.

The dust jacket is in Near Fine condition with mild foxing, heavy edge wear, a sunned spine and the $3.25 price on the front flap which looks great in a new archival wrap.

The Merchant of Venice is an intriguing drama of love, greed and revenge. At its heart, the play contrasts the characters of the maddened and vengeful Shylock, a Venetian moneylender, with the gracious, level-headed Portia, a wealthy young woman besieged by suitors.
