For sale is a rare and exceptional single song sheet music in an archival sleeve. 1940 Harms.  Music by George Gershwin. Piano Arrangement  by Henry Levine.  Piano solo, 8 pages.

On the rear cover is a full page ad with no excerpts. On the inside front and rear covers are one-bar excerpts from other Gotham Classics Piano Arrangements including: Night and Day (Cole Porter) and Tea For Two (Vincent Youmans), Rhapsody in Blue and Embraceable You also by George Gershwin.

The Man I Love is a popular standard with music by George Gershwin and lyrics by his brother Ira Gershwin. Part of the 1924 score for the Gershwin musical comedy Lady, Be Good, the song was deleted from that show and put into the Gershwins’ 1927 government satire Strike Up the Band (where it appears as “The Man I Love” and “The Girl I Love”), which closed out-of-town.

Lady, Be Good is a musical written by Guy Bolton and Fred Thompson with music by George and lyrics by Ira Gershwin. It was first presented on Broadway in 1924; the West End production followed in 1926. The story of the musical is about a brother and sister who are out of money; both are eager to sacrifice themselves to help the other. It premiered on Broadway at the Liberty Theatre on December 1, 1924 and closed on September 12, 1925, after 330 performances. The musical was staged by Felix Edwardes with musical staging by Sammy Lee and scenic design by Norman Bel Geddes. It starred brother and sister performers Fred and Adele Astaire.

The front cover is in Good condition with the previous owner’s name, two creases, no tears, lightly rounded corners and a partially separated seam.  The interior is in Very Good condition with mild edge wear and a strong seam. No marks or inscriptions inside. Pages lightly toned.
