Description

For sale: a Rare and Exceptional Heritage Press hardcover Edition of Lysistrata by Aristophanes  in a new translation by Gilbert Seldes. Heritage Press Edition stated on title page, 1962 on copyright page.  Forty black and white Illustrations by Pablo Picasso.

The book is in Near Fine  condition with clean, bright boards, strong title gilt on a square spine,  lightly foxed top page block, tight binding, mild spine tilt, lightly rolled spine ends, mild edge wear, and strong corners. The interior of the book is in Near Fine condition with an erased price on the first free end paper and no other marks, inscriptions, or signs of ownership. The end papers and the interior pages are clean and lightly toned.

No dust jacket as issued. The slipcase is in Near Fine condition with clean, lightly faded covers and mild edge and corner wear.

Lysistrata in the play by Aristophanes persuades the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace – a strategy, however, that inflames the battle between the sexes.
