On cold winter day in Old Russia, Kashtanka set off for a walk with her master, a poor carpenter. As usual he was berating her about one thing or another, when a regiment of soldiers marched by. Now Kashtanka had never been able to bear the sound of music, which set her nerves on edge. Howling in fear, she dashed away down the street and soon was lost.
