Description

For sale: a Rare and Exceptional first THUS, first printing hardcover copy of Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison in a Near Fine un-clipped dust jacket. Random House Edition 2002 stated. First Printing with number line starting at 2, as per publisher. This is a special facsimile first edition reprint by the original publisher to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Random House imprint. The text layout, and jacket design are the same as the first Random House Edition published in 1952, with a few obvious differences: the boards are all black, the spines have a new logo, the rear DJ has a bar code, the front flap has a modern price, the copyright page has new copyrights, a number line, and the rear flap includes a brief history of the naming of the company and the colophon.

The book is in Near Fine condition with clean, bright boards, strong title gilt on the straight spine, lightly foxed page blocks, tight binding, mild spine tilt, rolled spine ends, mild  edge wear, and lightly rubbed corners. The interior of the book is also in Near Fine condition with no marks, inscriptions, or other signs of ownership inside. The end papers and the interior pages are clean and bright, making it an excellent addition to any collection.

The dust jacket is in Near Fine condition with mild surface and edge wear, the $23.00 price is on the front flap, and looks great in a new Brodart archival wrap. Striking cover graphic by Edward McKnight Kauffer

Invisible Man is a milestone in American literature, a book that has continued to engage readers since its appearance in 1952. A first novel by an unknown writer, it remained on the bestseller list for sixteen weeks, won the National Book Award for fiction, and established Ralph Ellison as one of the key writers of the century.

Ships promptly in a corrugated mailer with book wrapped in both craft paper and multiple layers of bubble wrap.
