For sale: a Rare and Exceptional first edition, first printing hardcover copy of The Hunting of the Snark and Other Poems and Verses by Lewis Carroll with no dust jacket. Second Edition unstated, October 1903 Harper Brothers. First Printing with 1903 on title and copyright pages. Illustrated by Peter Newell with colored frontispiece (with tissue guard) and 39 B&W glossy plates. Page decorations by Robert Murray Wright.
The book is in Very Good condition with clean, bright red cloth with moderate title gilt on lightly sunned spine and stronger on the front cover caricature of “The Bellman” by Peter Newell on the front cover. The volume has clean, toned page blocks, faint top gilt, tight binding, no spine tilt, rolled and lightly rubbed spine ends, mild edge wear, and rubbed corners with no bare spots. The interior of the book is in Near Fine condition with the previous owner’s name on the first free end paper. The tissue guard on the frontispiece is clean and all the illustrations are all unmarked. No other marks, inscriptions, or other signs of ownership inside. The rear end paper and the interior pages are clean and lightly toned, making it an excellent addition to any collection.
