For sale: a Rare and Exceptional first edition, second printing hardcover copy of Farmer Giles Of Ham by J. R. R. Tolkien with no dust jacket. First Illustrated Edition unstated, 1976 Houghton Mifflin. Second Printing with incomplete number line 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2. Illustrated by Pauline Baynes.

The book is in Very Good condition with bright boards with moderate soiling and 1/4″ dab of rubber cement beneath the dragon’s snout on the front cover. Also, strong title ink on a straight spine, clean page blocks, tight binding, mild  spine tilt,  rubbed spine ends, mild edge wear, and lightly rubbed corners. The interior of the book is in Very Good condition with a short gift inscription from the previous owner. Also on the same page are the ghost of an erased price and residue from the removal of a bookplate. The rear end paper has one large spot. No other marks, inscriptions, or signs of ownership inside. The interior pages are clean and lightly toned, making it an excellent addition to any collection.

Farmer Giles of Ham is a comic medieval fable written by J. R. R. Tolkien in 1937 and published in 1949. The story describes the encounters between Farmer Giles and a wily dragon named Chrysophylax, and how Giles manages to use these to rise from humble beginnings to rival the king of the land.
