Presumed First Printing with no subsequent printing and $1.50 price on cover. This is the more common Apollo Edition with the vertical black band added to the front cover design and carrying the same price as the true first edition from the slightly larger Wm. Morrow publication.
VG paperback with clean boards, moderate edge wear, rubbed spine ends and heavy corner wear and no creases. Straight spine and tight binding. Thin volume – 88 pages. No marks or inscriptions inside. Pages clean and bright.
Dutchman opened in New York City on March 24, 1964, to perhaps the most excited acclaim ever accorded an off-Broadway production and shortly thereafter received the Village Voice’s Obie Award. The Slave, which was produced off-Broadway the following fall, continues to be the subject of heated critical controversy.
