Description

For sale: a Rare and Exceptional First paperback  Edition, early printing of Dubliners by James Joyce. First paperback edition unstated, 1958 Compass Books.  Seventeenth Printing November 1965 stated and a $1.45 cover price. Strong cover design by Ellen Raskin. 214 pages.

The exterior of the paperback edition is in Good condition, with clean, bright covers with a vertical reader crease, one corner crease, a strong title on a square spine, clean page blocks, a tight binding with no spine cracks, mild spine tilt, heavily rubbed spine edges and ends, heavy edge wear and rubbed corners. The interior of the book is in Very Good condition with no marks, inscriptions, or signs of ownership inside. The inside rear cover and the interior pages are clean and lightly toned, making it an excellent addition to any collection.

The remarkable collection of stories that make up Dubliners was described by Joyce himself as a series of chapters in the moral history of his community; and the arrangement of the tales reveals “a progression from childhood to maturity, broadning from private to public scope,” as Harry Levin noted. While the geographic boundary of these fifteen stories may be middle-class, catholic Dublin, the artistic boundary is set only by Joyce’s far-reaching genius.

Ships promptly in a corrugated mailer with the book wrapped in both craft paper and multiple layers of bubble wrap.
