For sale: a Rare and Exceptional first edition, later printing hardcover copy of Collected Poems by E. E. Cummings, complete with an un-clipped dust jacket protected in a new archival wrap. First American Edition unstated and undated, 1938 Harcourt Brace. Later printing with no print code on copyright page.
The book is in Very Good condition with bright boards with a few marks, strong title gilt on a partially wrinkled spine and the front cover. Also with, clean page blocks, tight binding, moderate to heavy spine tilt, rolled and rubbed spine ends, mild edge wear, and rubbed corners. The interior of the book is also in Very Good condition with the previous owner’s name on the first free end paper. No other marks, inscriptions, or other signs of ownership inside. The rear end paper and the interior pages are clean and lightly toned, making it an excellent addition to any collection.
The dust jacket is in Good condition with heavy surface wear, a sunned spine with the top 2″ missing, heavy edge wear, chips, gaps and the $4.50 price on the front flap. Looks great in a new Brodart archival wrap.
The first collection is from Cummings’ first six books of poetry – Tulips and Chimneys (1923), XLI (1925), & (And) (1925), Is 5 (1926), W (Viva) (1931), No Thanks (1935) – also contains some New Poems and an introduction from the poet.
