Description

For sale is a rare and exceptional hardcover First Edition of The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, protected in a new archival wrap. First Edition stated, 1970 Holt, Rinehart and Winston with the ISBN number 0-03-085074-6 stated on the copyright page. First printing unstated without a subsequent printing.

The book is in Very Good condition with clean, lightly faded boards, strong title ink on a tilted spine,  clean page blocks, tight binding, heavy  spine tilt, rolled spine ends, mild edge wear, and two bumped corners. The interior of the book is also in Very Good condition with a bookplate from the previous owner on the first free end paper and no other marks, inscriptions, or signs of ownership. The end papers and the interior pages are clean and lightly toned.

Good dust jacket has heavy wear to the edges with gaps and tears – mostly to the spine ends – and a one inch ragged tear on the top front that has stains from a prior tape repair. This first state dust jacket has the $5.95 price present on the front flap and the full text graphic on the front. The rear full-page photo of the author clean and unmarked. Looks great in new archival wrap.

In Morrison’s acclaimed first novel, Pecola Breedlove—an 11-year-old Black girl in an America whose love for its blond, blue-eyed children can devastate all others—prays for her eyes to turn blue: so that she will be beautiful, so that people will look at her, so that her world will be different. This is the story of the nightmare at the heart of her yearning, and the tragedy of its fulfillment.
