Description

For sale is a rare and exceptional Book Club Edition hardcover copy of The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, protected in a new archival wrap. This is the Book Of the Month Club (BOMC) edition that used the plates of the first edition third printing and created a facsimile edition with the same size and layout as the true first edition and no BOMC imprints. First Edition points include the ISBN number 0-03-085074-6, and “Published October 1970” stated with no subsequent dates on the copyright page. Third printing with a partial number line, 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10.

The book is truly a “gem” in Fine condition with spotless boards, strong title ink on a straight spine,  clean page blocks, tight binding, mild spine tilt, strong spine end, mild edge wear, and strong corners. The interior of the book is also in Fine condition with no marks, inscriptions, or other signs of ownership inside. The illustrated end papers and the interior pages are clean and bright, making it an excellent addition to any collection. No BOMC marks, dimples or gutter code, but includes the author’s “Afterword” dated November 1993.

The Near Fine dust jacket has a clean, bright surface with a strong sheen, mild rubbings on the back and no signs of edge wear. The jacket is the  second state design by Holly McNeeley-Poindexter, with no price but the 0977 code on the front flap.

In Morrison’s acclaimed first novel, Pecola Breedlove—an 11-year-old Black girl in an America whose love for its blond, blue-eyed children can devastate all others—prays for her eyes to turn blue: so that she will be beautiful, so that people will look at her, so that her world will be different. This is the story of the nightmare at the heart of her yearning, and the tragedy of its fulfillment.
