For sale: a Rare and Exceptional first paperback edition, early printing of The Birthday Party and The Room: Two Plays by Harold Pinter.  First Grove Press Edition unstated, 1961 Grove Press. Third Printing stated with 61-11770 LOC number on the copyright page and a $1.75 cover price. Includes 8 pages of black and white production photos.

The exterior of the paperback edition is in Very Good condition, with clean, lightly rubbed covers with no creases, a strong title on a lightly sunned spine, clean page blocks, no spine tilt, lightly rubbed spine ends, mild edge wear and lightly rubbed corners. The interior of the book is in Very Good condition with the previous owner’s crossed out name on the first free end paper and some ink transfer to the inside cover. No other marks, inscriptions, or  signs of ownership inside. The inside rear cover and the interior pages are clean and lightly toned, making it an excellent addition to any collection. Appears unread.

In The Birthday Party, a musician escapes to a dilapidated boarding house, where he falls victim to the shadowy, ritualized violence of two men who have followed him from his sinister past. In The Room, a derelict boarding house again becomes the scene of a visitation from the past when a blind man suddenly arrives to deliver a mysterious message. Both plays are invested with the elements that make Pinter’s work unique: the disturbing familiarity of the dialogue, the subtle characterization, and the abrupt mood and power shifts among the characters, which can be by turns terrifying, moving, and wildly funny.
