For sale: a rare and exceptional first edition, second printing hardcover copy of Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ by Lew Wallace, with no dust jacket. First Edition unstated. 1880 Harper and Brothers.  Presumed second printing with 560 pages of text and 16 pages of ads.

The exterior of the book is in Very Good condition with clean, blue cloth boards with some sheen still present, and strong title gilt on a lightly sunned spine and the front cover title and Star of Bethlehem design.  The book also features a faded gilt top stain and clean, but toned side and bottom page blocks. Also present is a tight binding, heavy spine tilt, and strong repairs on both hinges that are starting to crack. Also with, rolled and rubbed spine ends, mild edge wear, and rounded corners. The interior of book is in Very Good condition with the previous owner’s name and date received on the first free end paper.  The rear end paper and the interior pages are clean and moderately toned, making it an excellent addition to any collection.

Ben-Hur surpassed the fabulously popular Uncle Tom in the 19th century and was beloved for its attempt to faithfully represent the life and times of Jesus, and the person of Jesus himself.
