For sale: a Rare and Exceptional first paperback edition, early printing of The Beggar’s Opera and Companion Pieces by John Gay.  First Paperback Edition unstated, 1961 AHM (Crafts.) Sixth Printing stated with 66-16637 LOC number on the copyright page and a 85 cent cover price. Edited by C. F. Burgess.

The exterior of the paperback edition is in Very Good condition, with clean, lightly rubbed covers with multiple creases, a strong title on a lightly sunned spine, clean page blocks, mild spine tilt, rubbed spine ends, mild edge wear and lightly rubbed corners. The interior of the book is in Very Good condition with the previous owner’s name and school on the first free end paper. No other marks, inscriptions, or  signs of ownership inside. The inside rear cover and the interior pages are clean and lightly toned, making it an excellent addition to any collection. Appears unread.

This edition of The Beggar’s Opera for performance and study is well annotated and includes excerpts from Trivia: “Newgate’s Garland”, “An Epistle to a Lady,” “The Hare and Many Friends”; the ballads “Twas When the Seas Were Roaring,” “Sweet William’s Farewell to the Black-ey’d Susan,” “Molly Mog”; and letters to Jonathan Swift and others. Also included are an introduction, a list of the principal dates in the life of John Gay, as well as a selected bibliography.

Small Paperback volume with multiple plays ships promptly in a manila envelope with the book wrapped in both craft paper and bubble wrap.
