Description

For sale: a Very Rare first edition, early printing hardcover copy of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll with no dust jacket.  First Edition unstated, 1944 P. R. Gawthorn Ltd, London with.  Presumed First Printing with no dates on the title page and Printed in Great Britain by Richard Clay and Company” on the colophon page.  Profusely illustrated by Rene Cloke with in-text line drawings and eight plates.

The book is in Good condition with bright boards with heavy wear and a sunned spine with no title ink. Also with, strong title ink on the front board, stained page blocks, binding starting to loosen, mild spine tilt, rolled and rubbed spine ends, mild edge wear, and bumped and rounded corners with bare spots. The interior of the book is in Good condition with great color on the eight full-size, illustrated plates and the single-color text illustrations.  A few age spots here and there, but no other marks, inscriptions, or signs of ownership inside. The rear end paper and the interior pages are clean and evenly toned, making it an excellent addition to any collection.

Her delicately colored illustrations unlock a doorway to a whimsical, fantasy world and wide-eyed wonderment that spoke to a more innocent time for children.
