Description

For sale is a Very Good hardcover first edition, fifth printing, of The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger. This edition includes a Very Good later dust jacket, wrapped in a new archival wrap. The book is a Little Brown First Edition unstated, with the publisher’s name only on the title page, the author’s 1951 copyright on the copyright page and no subsequent dates. The fifth  printing is evidenced by the statement “Reprinted July 1952 (three times).”

The exterior of this hardcover edition is in very good condition. The black boards are clean with uneven sheen, the title gilt is faded. There is a tight binding, with mild edge wear, and lightly rubbed  corners. The bottom text block is flattened and top has some smudges. The bottom spine end has one spot of wear.  Inside the gutters are darkened and the front paste-down has a glue stain from a removed book plate. No other marks or inscriptions. The interior pages are clean, bright and supple.

The Very Good newer dust jacket with barcode has age-appropriate sunned spine, moderate smudges, and mild edge wear. It looks good in a new Brodart archival wrap.

The Catcher in the Rye is a groundbreaking novel that explores the mind of a young man struggling with growing up in society. Written in the 1950s, it remains a literary masterpiece and a must-read for all fans of classic American literature. Critics and reviewers have praised Salinger’s writing style and ability to capture the angst of adolescence, making this book a must-have addition to any serious collector’s library.
