Description

For sale is a rare First Edition, First Trade Printing with no dust jacket. 1944 Doubleday Doran. First Edition described “after the printing of a limited edition of 750 copies.” First Trade Printing with 1944 on both title and copyright pages and no subsequent print date.
The hardcover is in Good condition with lightly faded boards, moderate spotting, some smudges on page blocks, binding a bit loose, heavy spine tilt, and heavy edge and corner wear with lots of bare spots. The spine is lightly sunned, the title gilt is still present, but not the gilt of the author’s name. Heavy fraying to the top spine end. A small paper label from a period bookseller is on the first free end paper and the rear free end paper has a tape repair. Otherwise the pages are clean and lightly toned with no foxing. This is the full-size 343 p. edition, with the Wartime Conditions stamp on the copyright page with the Eagle-framed wartime notice.
No dust jacket.
Larry Darrell is a young American in search of the absolute. The progress of this spiritual odyssey involves him with some of Maugham’s most brillant characters – his fiancee Isabel, whose choice between love and wealth have lifelong repercussions, and Elliot Templeton, her uncle, a classic expatriate American snob.
Ships promptly in a secure mailer with book wrapped in both craft paper and multiple layers of bubble wrap.
