Description

For sale is a rare and exceptional NF/VG First Edition, Early Wartime Printing in a new archival wrap. 1944 Doubleday Doran. Edition unstated with 1944 on copyright and title pages, in the smaller 258 page format. Presumed Second Trade Printing with no subsequent print date and the Eagle-framed book Wartime Conditions imprint.
The hardcover is in Near Fine with clean, bright boards with a strong sheen, very strong title gilt on a tilted spine, a tight binding, lightly rolled spine ends, mild edge wear and moderately rounded corners.  No marks or inscriptions inside, but both end  papers are unevenly  toned with a few spots. The pages are clean and lightly toned. This is the Wartime Conditions volume with the  stamp on the copyright page promising a complete, unabridged standard length edition.
The un-clipped dust jacket is in Very Good condition with mild surface wear, heavy edge wear with chips, gaps and tears, and light toning and no stains to the inner surface. The dust jacket is a second state with $2.75 price, 4495-43 code and the matching Wartime Conditions stamp with eagle on the front flap. Very Rare! Not many of these survive. Looks great in a new Brodart archival wrap.
Larry Darrell is a young American in search of the absolute. The progress of this spiritual odyssey involves him with some of Maugham’s most brillant characters – his fiancee Isabel, whose choice between love and wealth have lifelong repercussions, and Elliot Templeton, her uncle, a classic expatriate American snob.
Ships promptly in a secure mailer with book wrapped in both craft paper and bubble wrap.
