Engaging, erotic, tense, disturbing, vivid and mysterious, Solstice may be the psychological masterpiece of her early novels. Here, Joyce Carol Oates explores a fraught and perilous relationship between two women; Monica Jensen a shy, modest, and recently divorced school teacher and Sheila Trask a worldly, sophisticated painter driven by her art. Despite, or by reason of, being complete opposites, they find themselves irresistibly drawn toward one another in a friendship which within months deepens, first as love, into fixation, and ultimately to a near-fatal obsession.
