For sale is a rare and exceptional First hardcover Edition, First Printing of Then and Now by W. Somerset Maugham in a new archival wrap. First Edition stated 1946 Doubleday Doran. First Printing with no subsequent printing on copyright page.
The exterior of the book is in Very Good with clean, bright boards with a strong sheen, strong title gilt on a tilted spine, a tight binding, lightly rolled spine ends, mild edge wear and lightly rounded corners. The rear end paper has damp stains that transferred to the rear paste down. No other marks or inscriptions inside. The front end paper and the inside pages are clean and lightly toned.
The un-clipped dust jacket is in Very Good condition with mild surface wear, heavy edge wear with chips, gaps and tears, and light toning and no stains to the inner surface. The dust jacket is a first issue with $2.50 price on the front flap. Looks great in a new Brodart archival wrap.
Then and Now is a historical novel by W. Somerset Maugham. Set mainly in Imola, Italy, but also in other Italian cities, including his hometown Florence that focuses on three months in the life of Niccolò Machiavelli during the Renaissance in Italy. The story explores Machiavelli’s political intrigues and a failed romantic affair, intertwining themes of power and seduction against the backdrop of his encounters with Cesare Borgia.
